Communicating Jazz:

Buttons Jazz Cafe | DeSoto, Texas

I wanted to provide some quick feedback for those who want to know more about the opening of Button's Food & Music's new
Buttons Jazz Cafe that 'officially' opens
tonight (4/21) in DeSoto, Texas.

I, and one of my colleagues had the opportunity to attend the 'invitation only' soiree' last night. We had a great time. The venue size is 'intimate' compared to it's larger Ft. Worth and Addison locations.

A little background on this DeSoto location shows how things can quickly move from one organization's hand to another. This particular location, 209 E. Pleasant Run in DeSoto was formerly Jokes and Jazz. At the time of the J&J introduction to the community it was heralded as a great opening but ultimately the business model didn't prevail. Personally, I never got a chance to check out J&J so I can't comment on it's failings but fail it did. Now, here comes Buttons Jazz Cafe in that same location but with a successful formula that has now worked with it's recent takeover of the former Sambuca Addison venue.

In my view, it's all about knowing and staying true to your message and vision. Button's does this. With CEO Herbert Hughes and Executive Chef, Keith 'Button's' Hicks at the helm they have managed to gain the confidence of the community wherever they have setup Buttons operations.

Attending this past evening's soft-opening for invited guests, you can see that the program is simple but elegant. You can expect a sit down environment with dining tables prominent throughout the venue which I believe has a capacity of 100-125. So, don't expect the same size and scope as the other Buttons operations. This is a smaller venue which demands some controls be in place. Management is committed to a more laid back setting and will be presenting quality performances from emerging artists in our area (which, personally, is one of the things that I love).

The stage is prominently positioned behind but lifted above the only bar in the room. It's a great view from wherever you are in the restaurant. And, this is a restaurant first. Buttons Jazz Cafe in DeSoto is a thoughtful play to provide quality food and entertainment in an intimate setting. From what I can see, the challenge will be to keep the venue intimate and focused on the food first. If this can be managed, Buttons Jazz Cafe will win out and will be one of the first venues of this kind to prove it's concept on the South-Side. I say, "Go for it, Buttons". And, they are.

Tonight begins the opening of the venue which may prove to be overwhelming at first. Remember, this is no where near the size of it's other locations. Over time, everyone will settle into the format and will be able to go to Buttons Jazz Cafe on the South-Side of Dallas and enjoy great date nights, girls nights out and much more.

Buttons Food & Music is part of our 'Prestige Social Program',
Jazz Up Social Spot', so you can look forward to a collaboration that brings you some great programming in the near (very near future). Congratulations to DeSoto. You have a great new dig! Check that out.

Hi Marvin,

Welcome to the network.

As I understand it, Buttons Jazz Cafe will be focused on local artists and smaller presentations. And, after attending the opening and seeing the size of the venue, that would probably be the best approach. A venue that small or intimate wouldn't be able to provide a ticket scenario that is affordable when booking most of the nationals. That was (in my opinion) what probably hurt J&J. You have to have a certain amount of seats in the room to sell. Now, Buttons Addison is another story. And, the goal is to start presenting bigger names. Let's watch and see what happens.

I've been to numerous dinners and concerts at J&J. I enjoyed them all. There were issues that made me think that J&J would not survive and I am truly sorry that it didn't. One of the great things about J&J was the national artists that performed there. Phil Perry, Tom Braxton, Aletha Rene just to name a few. That was great. IF Button's can continue that trend that will be great... if not, then I will pass. Up and coming artists are great however, Me and my cohorts are looking for a place that will have national artists appearing.

Can we please update the lists of wines that are being served... Jazz and vino complement one another. Both have to be good.
