We are looking for a new kind of rhythmic community, and we are looking for people who are interested in being a part of it.  The classic drum jam model of 30 djembes sitting around pounding out 16^th notes makes for a fun party, but there’s so much more potential to a gathering of drummers.  I feel that rhythm has its own version of melody, tension and release.  There’s so much space in between the notes that we can explore.

I have been playing at the Across the Street Bar on Wednesday nights for 15 years.  It has provided a fun environment to work with different grooves, learn to let them breathe, test out different variations, and practice listening to other musicians in a purely rhythmic context.  Loren Soman and I have recently reformatted this event to include a more complex Jazz rhythmic structure, metric modulations, and relative phrasing.  Time, space, tone, and dynamics are highly encouraged.  When the groove is solid, the dancers and fire performers really respond. 

There’s no cover.  You can bring three tones or an entire kit.  I’ll be playing the black congas starting around 10pm.
