Our recent tequila video tour took us to the renown Brown Forman estate of Casa Herradura in the lowlands region of Amatitan, outside of Guadalajara. Under the supervision of BF Mexico Global Ambassador Ruben Aceves, this estate is firing on all cylinders through it's two tequila lines, El Jimador and Casa Herradura.
Our visit with Ruben started in one of their Blue Agave fields, just after a large early morning thunderstorm rolled through. As you can see in the video, there are plants as far as the eye can see. They have some 22,000 acres and nearly 14 million plants under their ownership, harvesting year round. As you'll see in the video, harvesting these plants is labor intensive and requires precision, requiring the jimador (or worker) to fully expose and clean the pina from which tequila will be made. While they can weigh up to 200 pounds, it's astounding that a jimador can harvest one plant every two minutes, on average. They make it look so easy!
