Sherlock star Martin Freeman plays Bilbo Baggins in the first of a three part prequel to Lord Of The Rings from director Peter Jackson.
A roll-call of British and international acting talent lined the red-carpet in Wellington, with Martin Freeman the star of the show.
The actor, familiar to millions from his roles in The Office and Sherlock, plays Bilbo Baggins, while other members of the cast include Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood and Evangeline Lilly.
As the first in a three-part prequel to Lord of the Rings, producers are hoping The Hobbit proves a hit with audiences.
The films, which were shot back-to-back in New Zealand with an estimated budget of $500million (£312million) depict Bilbo's quest to reclaim the lost dwarf kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.
