On March 3, 7 pm, First Tuesday Social Justice Film Festival will present a tribute in films to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the thousand of peaceful, nonviolent demonstrators who marched from Selma, AL to the steps of the capital in Montgomery in March 1965 seeking voting rights for African Americans.
The event will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff, 3839 W. Kiest Blvd., Dallas and is cosponsored by the UUCOC’s Social Justice Ministry and the Dallas Peace Center http://dallaspeacecenter.org. There is no admission fee and refreshments will be provided. Audience discussion will follow, including a firsthand account.
The 5 day, 54 mile march, was led by African Americans, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and including members of various religious denominations and other organizations. The presentation will include films taken of the march and the violent incidents perpetrated on the marchers from various points of view.
Each month, First Tuesday Social Justice Films hosts free, public screenings of socially relevant films followed by audience talk back. “Nuclear Savage” will be shown on April 7. For more information and schedules, visit the website at http://www.firsttuesdayfilms.org/index.shtml
