Born in Bitetto, Italy, the son of a popular song singer, during his youth sang in various small choirs. Years after he accompanied Franco Califano, Peppino Di Capri, Fred Bongusto, Rosario Fiorello and others on their Concert tours. After a long series of participations with Italian and international artists, and a small production of disco music, during 2006 he achieved success with the Schema Records album Handful of Soul. In November 2009 Mario Biondi released "If" and the first single "Be Lonely" on the Tattica label. The album shot up the charts and went triple - platinum.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength packing auditoriums across the world. His deep and warm voice recalls the legendary interpreters of soul and rhythm and blues music. Referencing greats like Barry White, Issac Hayes and Lou Rawls, at the same time he gives his own spin to the soul and jazz genres.

If you’ve ever seen footage of a lot of people crossing the road in Tokyo, it was probably taken in Shibuya. A place swarming with people, it’s easy to feel like just one of the hive, an insignificant cog in the machine. It would take a lot to stand out there.

That’s why Ethnic Minority’s show was so mind-blowing. They managed to completely transform this crowded space into a stage, adding to the experience of everyone in it, breaking the idea that we are all automatons obeying traffic lights, but being capable of independent and artistic creativity.

Amassing a crowd in Shibuya is obviously not a problem. But keeping it there, getting it to holler, clap, shout and dance, to interact, to stand transfixed — THAT’s a feat no average performers could achieve.
Their jazz music is lively, improvised, brilliant and absolutely cool. I cannot recommend it enough — Nick

If you’ve been near Shibuya station at night in the past twelve months, you may well have encountered three young guys playing up a storm to passers-by, many of whom have stopped to listen, cheer and/or dance. This trio goes by the name of 横田寛之Ethnic Minority, and is led by saxophonist Hiroyuki Yokota. Backed by some funky amplified upright bass and a unique drum set-up of snare, customised cajon, and cymbals, the group has an aggressive, rough-and-ready sound, drawing on a variety of influences, to make a sound it has labeled ‘grunge jazz’. In addition to their own compositions, 横田寛之Ethnic Minority often perform a distortion-heavy version of the Nirvana anthem Smells Like Teen Spirit, as well as other covers.
