About Me:
For the painter, the primary colors are at the core of every work of art. No matter how complex the work may eventually become, the simplicity and beauty of the original three colors is the essential element that brings everything together. For Matt and Luke Marantz, the musical brother team behind the newly formed Boston/New York-based band the Primary Colors, it is that essential element in music that is brought to the forefront.

In a contemporary music world dominated by complexity, Matt and Luke Marantz find their home with beautiful melodies and heartfelt lyrics. With both brothers having attended prestigious conservatories, Matt at the Manhattan School of Music, Luke at the New England Conservatory of Music, both are well versed in everything from the bebop cannon to the more contemporary improvisational language of modern jazz. While jazz elements are obviously present in the music, the band leans more toward folk and rock influences citing musicians and bands such as Elliott Smith, the Beatles, Iron and Wine, Sufjan Stevens and others.

Call it what you want, “we just want to make beautiful music”, says Matt. These brothers are interested in something deeper than labels. “What we are really trying to get at is the vitality of the music, and really, who we are as musicians, brothers and human beings”, says Luke. The music is highly influenced by the brother’s histories. With songs like “Texas”, where the brothers are both originally from, and the playful “Dirk Wirk”, citing the local Dallas-area basketball star, the brothers show where they’ve come from while simultaneously taking listeners on a journey towards where they are going.

With musicians from all across the country, the band features Julia Easterlin (Vocals), Matt Marantz (Saxophones), Luke Marantz (Piano/Keyboards), Greg Duncan (Guitar), Aaron Darrell (Bass) and Lee Fish (Drums). Look for the new EP to be released in late August of 2012.

Restaurant Review: The French Room in Dallas

This opulent restaurant clings to the fine-dining standards of old. They still have a dress code— no jeans, no tennis shoes. Tables are set formally with crystal wine glasses, china, and knife rests. I recognized most of the people working the floor; our server has been working there for 28 years. Ask for a glass [...]

Scenes from Brew Riot 2013 in the Bishop Arts District

Brew Riot pumped  right into the heart of the Bishops Arts District on Sunday. The line to get in was long and the smiles were plentiful. So much beer. This is the fifth time this celebration of home brewing has gone off with tremendous success. There were countless masters of home brewing in attendance, delivering [...]

The Dark Side of Juicing: How a Popular Cleanse Made a People Newspapers Reporter Go to the Emergency Room

Sarah Bennett, a reporter for People Newspapers, is a jolly person to be around. It made me sad to know she’d been violently ill after doing a Roots Juice cleanse for a story. Her article about the experience came out in the May 17, 2013 issue of Park Cities People. – Carol Shih “Sleepiness, Sickness Ensue” [...]
