Mission
Sandaga Jazz is dedicated to the preservation of jazz and jazz education. It has two components: youth program (Youthful Jazz) and the jazz venue (SandagaJazz).
Description
Sandaga Youthful Jazz is a non-profit entity dedicated to keeping jazz alive through our youth. It was founded as a component of Sandaga Jazz and has three key objectives.
1) To provide a venue for all young people to perform in a professional setting.
2) To raise funds to help youth attend summer jazz camps.
3) To provide donated instruments to youth who cannot afford to purchase one.
Through the instrument program we put donated instruments in the hands of students. If the instruments need repair, we solicit services to get them repaired before passing them along to the students. On the third Sunday of each month, Sandaga Jazz serves as a venue for youth to perform, often with local professional musicians and music educators. Several students who perform regularly have gone on to attend jazz camps. To support their efforts, Sandaga provides the venue to host performances to raise funds to assist with their expenses.

SandagaJazz serves as a venue for local jazz musicians to perform. Any jazz musician is welcome to play at the weekly Tuesday Nite Jam. The house band composed of Bernard Wright, Bobby Sparks, S’Ankh Rasa and Gerard Bendix are often joined by Shelley Carroll, Brad Leali, Quamon Fowler and others. Additionally, Shelley and Brad keep big band jazz alive with a monthly performance featuring vocalist Sandra Kaye. Sandaga also presents occasional performances by nationally known musicians, Steve Turre, Wycliff Gordon, Roy Hargrove and others.
