About Me:
OLA ONABULE - The name represents true soul. OLA'S voice - unmistakably gentle and wistful, haunting and heartbreaking, very special and unique reminiscent of the great Soul and Jazz artists of the 1960s and 70s, whose music was able to change the course of history because it changed perceptions and opened minds.

OLA ONABULE is an inspired artist for the 21st Century who has written, recorded and produced 7 albums on his label Rugged Ram Records. Ola's music has been performed on the largest festival stages worldwide including the main stage of the Montreal Jazz Festival, Vancouver International Jazz Festival and many others. In Germany, Ola has collaborated with The WDR Big Band in Cologne Philharmonie, The Babelsberg Film Orchestra in Nikolaisaal Potsdam and most recently with The SWR Big Band at the Jazzfest Aalen with arrangements of his beautifully crafted songs.

SEVEN SHADES DARKER is a modern classic. Grooves undoubtedly rooted in the Soul and Blues of the late sixties and early Seventies make an unlikely but easy peace with mournful, complex African melodic lines. Seemingly conventional 4/4 grooves beguile with inviting familiarity whilst slipping potent lyrical nuggets under the radar of our assumptions. Ballads are new requiems, odes to the passing of loved ones, Funky jaunts document the ebbing away of precious time, and deal with jealousy, cowardice, loss of identity and the world through the eyes of an unwanted visitor is set to the galloping gait of an african church hymn.

What sets “SEVEN SHADES DARKER” apart is Ola’s lyrical sensibility, poetic in tone and attuned to the issues of the day; as Ola puts it himself, “Though my music is of a different idiom, I write with the heart of a folk songwriter and the desire for my lyrics to be heard and read.”

Ola has shared stages with some of the world's finest soul and jazz artistes; Al Jarreau, Dianne Reeves, Joe Zawinul, Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole, Roy Hargrove, Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle. Ola seems set to become a name that will last as long.

Judy Dunston Kissel is Forced Out of Partnership at Dunston’s on Lovers Lane in Dallas

I wasn’t going to post anything on this news until I sat down with Judy Dunston Kissel tomorrow, but I’ve received several emails from readers who are hearing different reports. All I can tell you at this point is that Judy, who has been working at Dunston’s Prime Steakhouse Lovers Lane for 40 years,  and her [...]

Fire at Luna’s Tortilla Factory on Harry Hines Blvd.

Hawk-eyed SideDisher, Brad Twitty, just informed us that Luna’s Tortillas has just battled with a large-scale fire. Looks like the roof is pretty much gone. A Dunston’s Steakhouse employee, working across the street, confirms that the fire happened within the last hour. Luna’s Tortillas on 8524 Harry Hines Blvd. was founded in 1924 by Maria Luna. [...]

‘Le Bilboquet Made Us Leave an Empty Restaurant!’

Friday evening, D Magazine’s lifestyle editor, Raya Ramsey, and D: The Broadcast’s Courtney Kerr headed over to Le Biboquet for cocktails. The restaurant opened last week and Carol filed a report on the French bistro in the former L’Ancestral space at Travis Walk. Here’s Ramsey’s report: Courtney and I decided to pop in (no reservations) at 5 [...]

Let’s Help Kickstart Terra Tech, an Indoor Farm, in Deep Ellum

Jake King-Gilbert is a Connecticut-native living in Dallas, and he’s done something most people haven’t: he’s turned his entire apartment living room into a hydroponic system that’s 8 ft. tall, 6 ft. long, and 4 ft. wide. Hydroponics is a way of growing plants in water without soil. He chuckles when I ask him the dimensions [...]

Dallas Does Food & Wine Classic in Aspen

We dispatched Brad Murano, otherwise known as The Brad as in The Brad’s Adventures in Food, to the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen this weekend. He files a photo essay of the glamorous event. The Food & Wine Classic in Aspen isn’t just about the chef demonstrations, informative seminars, and massive Grand Tastings, it’s about parties. [...]
