Event Description

Martha Burks has been the music industry for over 20 years. She has been descried as a poised vocalist with an exceptional range of vocal prowess. A bonafide institution in the DFW music scene, many might recall Ms.Burks from her residencies at DFW finest jazz clubs over the years such as,the Jazba,RJ's By The Lake,The Nana Grille,TBAAL Galas,Brooklyn's and Button's to name a few.

Ms.Burks began her career during her youth in church in her native Malvern, Arkansas. She would, aside her late brother, trumpeter Harry Burks, often perform for neighbors and relatives.Ms.Burks has sang everything from gospel to pop, to jazz and soul! She captivates her audience with sparkling personality to match her indisputable vocal skills. She can scat with the best of them invoking images of the greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae, Anita Baker and Dianne Reeves. True to form, she is always a true sophisticated lady.

In the eighties, Ms.Burks was introduced to a jazz producer/enthusiast named Bill Craig.Quickly recognizing the unlimited potential in the gifted vocalist,Craig introduced her to the late jazz drummer, Paul Guerrero. These efforts eventually accumulated to a recording session in which Ms.Burks met the legendary jazz pianist/vocalist,Jay McShann....forging a working relationship that led to the 1984 album"Magical Jazz".Later,in 1985,she recorded on legendary jazz trumpeter/vocalist,Chet Baker's"My Foolish Heart"album. These fortuitous meetings marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career for Ms.Burks that is still vibrant and strong to this day!
